ECMC INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Summary

To support project logistics organizations in attracting and developing next generation of young talents through an enhanced internship program that exposes students to career opportunities in the project logistics industry.

About the Program

ECMC has created unique conduit for Logistics and Supply Chain students to gain exposure to the Project Logistics industry through internships with its diverse group of members ranging from Manufactures to Freight Forwarders to Engineering, Procurement and Construction companies. The single entry point through ECMC unveils students to some of the top companies in the Project Logistics field offering opportunities for immediate knowledge, career planning, work experience, and critical networking for their future in a Project Logistics career. While each company is diverse in their functions within the Project Logistics industry, the program is designed to allow interns assignments in everything from HSSE, Financials, Planning, Procurement, Import and Export Compliance, and Contracts all under the support of an industry professional as a mentor. Internship periods are flexible to student and company needs ranging from part-time or full-time during summer, fall, and spring semesters and can culminate in a capstone presentation to senior project leadership.

Overview of Assignments

Interns should expect to work on hands-on projects that combine both academic and non-academic skills. Projects will involve interfacing with, and increasing interns working knowledge of project logistics, freight forwarding, and logistics related departments within an organization. Each individual will be given challenging assignments that provide clear objectives and continuous feedback. The following assignments have been designed to enable intern to apply the following knowledge on assigned project(s) under direct supervision of a mentor.

Project Logistics

  • Planning and execution of project logistics
  • Logistics study / Route survey
  • Scheduling / Cost control
  • Developing Scope of Work
  • Technical Bid Evaluation
  • Selecting and evaluating carriers
  • Permitting
  • Load Out
  • Import / Export Compliance
  • Risk analysis and mitigation

Project/Freight Forwarding

  • Freight Management (different transport modes)
  • Business development / project sales
  • Invoicing
  • Proposal
  • Import and Export
  • HSSE

Purchasing/Expediting

  • Finding and selecting the right supplier
  • Preparation of issuance of purchase order
  • Expediting
  • Minimizing schedule and cost problems
  • Mitigating risk – legal
  • Financial and schedule

Materials Management

  • Track progress and report material deliveries to field
  • Inventory auditing
  • Generate material summaries
  • Assist construction management team
  • Assist subcontractors (receiving, order status, etc.)
  • Supervise warehousing

About ECMC: The Exporters Competitive Maritime Council (ECMC) is an alliance of project cargo industry representatives working together to support, foster, and maintain the competitive advantage of U.S. domiciled companies in international trade through participation in and development of key initiatives. The main purpose of the organization is to represent the interests of the United States exporters with respect to project cargo; export trade, transportation and regulatory issues.

Internship Program: The internship is provided through the general support of the following member organizations below that are dedicated to training and mentoring the next generation of logistics leaders. The ECMC Education Committee facilitates the internship process between universities and member organizations. Students interested in the program are encouraged to contact their logistics program director.

Qualifications / Eligibility

  • Demonstrated strong leadership, analytical, problem-solving interpersonal and communication skills
  • Passion for learning and making a difference
  • Team oriented, self-starter
  • Basic knowledge in Microsoft Office applications
  • Junior or senior level college student interested in a career in logistics
