The HDCS Study Abroad Program offers students a unique opportunity to enhance their academic journey while immersing themselves in new cultures. Offered once every two years, this program provides students with hands-on learning experiences in global contexts, focusing on intercultural understanding, personal development, and professional growth.

Eligibility
- GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Open to students from any major (undergraduate or graduate)
- Must be 18+ years old by the date of travel
- Participation in all program activities
- Compliance with the University of Houston’s Code of Conduct
- Attendance at all four face-to-face pre-departure classes

Program Overview
Past Program: Paris and Milan (2023)
In 2023, students embarked on a 10-day immersive experience through Paris and Milan, gaining firsthand insights into fashion, culture, and sustainability. The itinerary included:
- Company Visits:
- BCG Consultant: A behind-the-scenes look at the consulting industry in Paris, focusing on consumer behavior and retail strategies.
- Dolce & Gabbana: An exploration of Italian fashion and culture, with discussions about the cultural influences from both northern and southern Italy.
- Cultural Immersion:
- French Cooking Class: Students participated in a traditional French cooking class, where they learned how to prepare iconic dishes.
- Guided Tour of Paris: A walking tour of Paris' historic sites, including the Eiffel Tower, followed by a Night Boat Tour along the Seine.
- Service Project: Students worked with a non-profit organization that assists immigrants, preparing toiletry items for distribution.
- Sustainability Lecture: A lecture from a local professor about sustainability initiatives in Paris and the importance of personal carbon footprints.
- Free Time for Exploration: Students had opportunities to explore local culture through food (such as escargot) and shopping, gaining insights into the Parisian retail experience.
- Milan Cultural Exploration:
- Art, History, and Design: A guided tour exploring Milan’s rich cultural history, including visits to Teatro Alla Scala, the Milan Cathedral (Duomo), and Castello Sforzesco.
- Scavenger Hunt: Students participated in a scavenger hunt at the Milan Market, learning about the region's market culture and retail environment.
- Leather Shopping in Florence: A day trip to Florence, where students explored the region’s famed leather markets.
- Lake Como and Switzerland: A scenic journey to Lake Como, including stops in Bellagio and Lugano, Switzerland, providing a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of European cultures.
Upcoming Program: Madrid and Barcelona (2025)
The next HDCS Study Abroad experience will take students to Madrid and Barcelona, Spain. The itinerary includes:
- Company Tours: Learn about Spain’s retail fashion industry and talent management strategies in global business.
- Cultural Excursions: Participate in walking tours of historical monuments, a scavenger hunt, and a traditional paella cooking class.
