Technology Graduate Programs Achieve STEM Designation

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has announced that the Construction Management and Supply Chain and Logistics Technology Master of Science degree programs at the University of Houston College of Technology have earned the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) designation. In addition, the Technology Project Management graduate program offered by the construction management department, achieved the STEM designation in 2017.    The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that 1.2 million job openings are in STEM-related fields. Often referred to as the jobs of the future, STEM-based careers are growing in demand and salaries for graduates are highly competitive.

“The STEM-program designation ensures that our graduate programs will continue to be competitive and attractive to the best and brightest students, which further strengthens our mission to prepare qualified industry-ready graduates,” said Dr. Lingguang Song, chair of UH construction management (CM) department.  “Our graduate programs integrate theory and the latest industry practices, providing students a solid foundation of analytical skills that are immediately applicable to solving real-world problems.”

The CM programs offer flexible options for online and on-campus classes enjoyed by both working professionals and full-time students. Many students work in diverse areas from engineering and construction, oil and gas, and logistics, to health care, information technology, and the public sector.  International students will have an added benefit from the STEM designation. It will allow them to qualify for the STEM-only time extension of a total of 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT).
