Competitors wind up as Sports Authority winds down

Sports Authority piled its debt so high it couldn't even buy more merchandise.

It was virtually shackled as its many competitors developed new store models that provided more exciting customer experiences.

Now it's in bankruptcy and closing stores across the nation. And its competitors are poised to fill the holes it leaves behind, particularly in the Houston area where the struggling chain is shutting 11 stores - many in prime locations.

With millions of residents straddling a region with onshore and offshore amenities, Houston is a high-stakes retail landscape for sporting goods. It's home turf for Katy-based Academy Sports & Outdoors, which is approaching 30 stores.
