The University of Houston is the second most diverse university in the nation and College of Technology clearly reflects that diversity, with the best and brightest students from differing backgrounds and skill levels. The College of Technology Student Success Program for First Time in College (FTIC) students is an effort to ensure that our students enjoy success in the first years of their collegiate careers. The program began in fall 2015, assisting 50 students.
Designed to lay the foundation for future educational and career successes by providing students with the proper tools to excel academically, the program aims to increase the retention rates of FTIC students from entrance into the University to their second year and to improve their performance, measured by increased cumulative Grade Point Averages (GPA's). Already, student GPA's have increased by approximately 30 basis points as compared to the previous year's FTIC students.
Research shows that student engagement with faculty, staff and peers is paramount in predicting academic success. The FTIC program offers unique opportunities for freshman to connect with various campus resources, including faculty and peers within the College of Technology. These peer and faculty support groups provide extended academic support throughout the fall and spring semesters.
