The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) has granted six-year reaccreditation to the Computer Information Systems (CIS) program. The CIS program received original accreditation in 2009. ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.
The year-long preparation for the review process was an intensive team effort. "As program coordinator, Professor Bret Detillier' s leadership and the continuous improvement processes implemented by our CIS faculty members were key to accomplishing this significant achievement," said Raymond Cline, Professor and Chair of the Information and Logistics Technology Department in the College of Technology. Professors Susan Miertschin and Keith Lancaster played significant roles in the preparation of the comprehensive self-study report.
Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision, and safety are of the utmost importance.
ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). There are only three information systems programs accredited in Texas, 41 in the US, and 54 worldwide. It currently accredits almost 3,500 programs at nearly 700 colleges and universities in 28 countries. More information about ABET, its member societies, and the accreditation criteria used to evaluate programs can be found at www.abet.org.
