University of Houston construction management student, Curtis Lucas, has been named as a recipient of the Patrick J. Kiley Excellence in Leadership Scholarship through the Association of General Contractors (AGC) Houston Chapter. The AGC is the leading association for the construction industry.

Now in his second semester at UH, Lucas is encouraged more than ever and credits the UH construction Management program for helping to transform his career in unimaginable ways. Successfully balancing the family responsibilities with the demands of working full time while in school seemed daunting to Lucas at first. However, he acknowledges that the encouragement from Dr. Eldin carries significant weight in his decision to enroll in the construction management program to work toward his degree while working full-time. "It seemed as if I had a huge learning curve to overcome, but everything seemed to fall into place as I got more involved with the AGC and developed relationships with people in the industry," he said. "Earning the scholarship is a clear signal of the support that is available to help me accomplish my goals," he added.

An electrician by trade, Lucas’s interest in the program was piqued by attending the fall 2014 College of Technology career fair where he met representatives from Satterfield and Pontikes Construction, Inc., a leader in the industry. Impressed by his energy and enthusiasm, when the opportunity for a junior estimator arose, Curtis landed the job.

Curtis and other scholarship recipients will be honored at the 2015 AGC Houston Patrick J. Kiley Excellence in Leadership Scholarship awards breakfast on Thursday, April 9, at the Hess Club.
