One of the duties of an academic advisor is to encourage students to extend their experiences beyond traditional campus boundaries. Carlo Deason, senior academic advisor for the College of Technology, followed his own advice and competed in the 2014 North, Central America, and Caribbean Masters Track and Field Championship (NCCWMA), held at the National Stadium in La Sabana Metropolitan Park, San Jose, Costa Rica, August 21 - 24. Open to athletes 30 years old and up, the championship is a regional international event recognized by World Masters Athletics (WMA). Deason competed in the 800 meter and 1500 meter races, finishing in ninth place and fifth place respectively. He enjoyed the experience in the highly competitive event, which proved to be challenging. "My performance was affected by the high altitude of San Jose. But, most of my American teammates would agree, this was one of the best venues in which we have competed," Deason said.
