Students Engage with Industry Partners at Petroleum Industry Expert Dinner

The College of Technology Petroleum Technology Initiative welcomed more than 100 students, faculty, alumni and industry partners to the Petroleum Industry Expert presentation sponsored by Halliburton. In addition to networking with energy industry professionals, this event held at the Hilton - University of Houston on November 6, provided opportunities to learn about multibillion dollar projects in deep and ultra-deep water oil and gas developments around the world.

Since 2008, Halliburton has supported the College of Technology’s Petroleum Technology Program through highly valued events and scholarships for students taking courses in the Petroleum Technology Initiative (PTI) directed by Jack Christiansen.

“Halliburton’s contributions to the College of Technology strongly reinforce our ability to provide the best in class engineering technology education for our students”, said Dean William F. Fitzgibbon in his opening remarks.

Galina Sheridan, deputy director of the PTI, presented the mission, benefits to the UH students, and plans for continuing collaboration with energy industry experts, companies, and professional organizations.

Guest speaker, Kurt Albaugh, is a certified Professional Engineer with more than 39 years of international and domestic oil and gas experience. He has worked with major exploration and production, engineering and service companies, such as Transocean, Dolphin, Mustang Engineering, Amoco, BHP Billiton, and REPSOL.  Aside from consulting, Albaugh serves as a volunteer editor and technical advisor for Offshore Magazine. Albaugh facilitated the discussion on Offshore Deep and Ultra-Deepwater Field Development Projects and Subsea Architectures. Many students shared that the guest speaker Kurt Albaugh was very informative, easy to understand and gracious in sharing his deep knowledge about the industry.

“This was a great chance to network with different industry professionals,” several of the students commented. Networking session table hosts from AIG, Aker Solutions, Bechtel Offshore Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Chevron, Hess Corporation, KBR Shell, Matheson and Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America offered their insight about the industry as they mingled with the students.

The College of Technology appreciates the collaborative effort of Halliburton and industry professionals for being resourceful means for students seeking to break into the oil and gas industry.
