Conklin Named Fellow of the Information Systems Security Association

Dr. Wm. Arthur Conklin, Associate Professor, has been named a fellow of the Information Systems Security Association. The Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) is a not-for-profit, international organization of information security professionals and practitioners. It provides educational forums, publications and peer interaction opportunities that enhance the knowledge, skill, and professional growth of its members. With a membership of more than 10,000 information security personnel worldwide, ISSA is the leading professional society for information security professionals.

Dr. Conklin’s recognition as fellow stems from his dedicated involvement in national efforts to create applied technology curricula to address critical shortfalls in information security professionals. He is director of the Center for Information Security Research and Education (CISRE), in the UH College of Technology, which is recognized by the US National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. In addition, he is program coordinator for the Master of Science in Information System Security.

The Control Systems Security Lab or SCADA lab has become a vital component of the College of Technology’s Security Program.  Built with funds invested by the university and industry, this facility allows students to perform hands on experiments using the systems industry employs to control energy, smart grid, manufacturing plants and more.

The ability to experience security issues in a real-world environment on a systems level is instrumental in developing the next generation of technology and security leadership.  The laboratory facilities and curricula developed in the College of Technology are currently being adopted at other institutions across the country.

In addition to teaching and service to the College of Technology, Dr. Conklin has served on two national working groups. He has served as co-chair of the DHS/DoD Software Assurance Forum working group for workforce education, training and development.  He is also active in the DHS sponsored Industrial Control Systems Joint Working Group (ICSJWG) efforts associated with workforce development and cyber security aspects of industrial control systems.

He has co-authored six security books and numerous academic articles associated in the area of information security.  He holds multiple security certifications and has served as an expert witness in several legal cases.

Conklin has earned two terminal degrees, a Ph.D. in Business Administration (specializing in Information Security) from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and the degree Electrical Engineer (specializing in Space Systems Engineering) from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.
