The 15th Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) Engineering Conference (GEC15) will be held Oct 23 – 25, 2012 at the Hilton Americas and the University of Houston. During the evening of Tuesday, Oct 23, the popular GENI demo and networking event will be hosted at the UH Alumni Center.
GENI is a suite of network research infrastructure now in its prototyping and deployment phase. It is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support experimental research in network science and engineering. UH was selected as one of only 10 universities nationwide in the initial rollout of the GENI. The university's participation will enable research innovations that shape the technical infrastructure of future internets and their impact on society as a whole. Other top tier universities selected for participation include Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, New York University, and Princeton. Associate Professor of Engineering Technology Deniz Gurkan, the only researcher in Texas to receive GENI support to date, spearheaded this effort. Her projects, in combination with the regional network infrastructure (regional networks such as LEARN, SETG with RENoH) and the university's IT support group, demonstrated the prerequisite capabilities for hosting a GENI node at UH.
At GEC15, participants will learn how to use GENI, get hands-on help running experiments, and meet many of the most active networking and distributed systems researchers and developers from across the United States. Newcomers and skilled experimenters will participate in:
- Extensive "hands on" tutorial sessions, both beginning and advanced
- Coding sprints to help get experiments running
- Planning workshops for GENI's expansion across dozens of campuses
- Design discussions and demonstrations of new GENI features including the GENI Portal, instrumentation, and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) research
