Senior Capstone Project MyVoice Takes First Place at ASEE-GSW Conference

The College of Technology team that designed and implemented "MyVoice," a sign language interpreter, won the first place award for their paper and presentation at the 2012 American Society of Engineering Education-Gulf Southwest Annual Conference (ASEE-GSW) in El Paso, Texas, April 4-6, 2012. "We are proud of such a contribution to society through MyVoice, which breaks the barrier between deaf community and common society," said Dr. Farrokh Attarzadeh, Associate Professor, Engineering Technology. This competition was particularly challenging since the conference organizers combined the undergraduate and graduate students into a single group. Tina Mathews, a graduate assistant for the capstone class presented the project.

Previously, the MyVoice project won the third place award at the UH-Undergraduate Research Day in October 2011 and at the inaugural College of Technology 2011 Undergraduate Research Symposium in December. The team's success has garnered local Houston media attention.

MyVoice is a collaborative project between the capstone students in the Computer Engineering Technology program and the capstone students in the College of Architecture's Industrial Design program. Dr.Farrokh Attarzadeh (Engineering Technology) and Dr. Eun Sook Kwon (Industrial Design) guided the team.
