Swansea Delegation Visits the University of Houston

The delegation met with President Renu Khator and discussed the president's vision and desire to expand research efforts to the United Kingdom with a particular focus on biomedical technology and energy technology research.

The University of Houston, Rice University and Swansea University are active participants in the Texas-United Kingdom Collaborative which is focuses on research and student exchanges.

The delegation included:

  • Ian Cluckie, Pro-Vice Chancellor
  • Steve Conlan, Associate Professor
  • Mark Rees, Professor
  • Mike Sullivan, Professor
  • James Abbey of Rice University, Project Officer Knowledge Economy, Institute of Innovation, Swansea University.

At the University of Houston, one potential project is headed by Dr. Cliff Dacso, Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen University Professor, using technology to analyze the breath and check for various diseases. Other projects could include advanced printing, engineering, and science/mathematics.

After meeting with the president, the delegation visited with representatives from the College of Technology, the Cullen College of Engineering, and the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. Dean Fitzgibbon hosted a lunch for the delegation and university representatives. While in the United States, the Swansea delegation also visited Texas A&M University, the Institute of Space Medicine and attended a conference.
