UH and HCC Further Ease the Transfer Process

HOUSTON, March 9, 2009 - The University of Houston and Houston Community College have signed an agreement that aims to provide a seamless curriculum transition for transfer students interested in pursuing degrees in consumer science and merchandising at UH.

The agreement, forged in the fall, allows for HCC student who obtain associate's degrees in applied science in one of 16 approved programs to apply those course credits toward a bachelor's degree at the department of human development and consumer science at UH's College of Technology.

The college's dean, William Fitzgibbon, said the deal was struck with student success in mind.

"The agreement will ensure there is no loss of credits or duplication of coursework," Fitzgibbon said. "The consumer science and merchandising program offers studies in sales, management, marketing and logistics - all of which will complement the curriculum of the HCC programs."

HCC transfer and credentialing specialist Mark Tengler said the articulation agreement simply put on paper what had been in place in spirit for many years.

"UH has always been transfer-friendly, but the word doesn't always get out. So, this agreement makes it official and really helps HCC students feel confident about the transfer process," Tengler said.

The 16 approved HCC programs covered by the agreement include studies in fashion, design, business, logistics, communication, childhood development, real estate and travel.
