The new Biotechnology Major was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board effective October 23rd 2008.
The new Bachelor of Science Program in Biotechnology is a research based interdisciplinary program that provides hands-on experience with cutting edge technology used in the biotechnology industry. Two tracks, one in bioinformatics and the other in bioprocessing will give students the flexibility to tailor the degree based on their interests. Courses in regulation and quality control are also offered to familiarize students with issues such as quality control and regulatory affairs in the biotechnology industry. The program was one of the core initiatives developed through the Center for Life Sciences Technology and was funded by grants totaling over a million dollars from Texas Workforce Commission and the National Science foundation. In addition to the major, two minors — one in Bioinformatics in Biotechnology and Biomedical sciences and the other in Bioprocessing in Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical sciences are also offered.
