University of Houston students from computer information systems, digital media, and engineering technology programs participated in a one-day “UHacks” event co-sponsored by Sysco and Amazon Web Services (AWS), April 19. Inspired and led by students, the hackathon attracted thirty students who worked in small teams to solve real world business challenges related to cloud computing. Their challenge was to analyze a business scenario, reach agreement on a solution, and prepare a presentation within six hours.
Using their skills in JavaScript code, HTML, and the Adobe Creative Suite, digital media senior, Jackeline Velasquez, Marko Jovanovic and Mark G, computer science majors, worked together on a winning proposal for a smart shopper platform. “This experience gave us a realistic exposure to the types of challenges we could encounter on technology projects. I learned the importance of applying the principles of teamwork to reach business goals,” said Jackeline Velasquez.
