The University of Houston Alumni Association (UHAA) has announced its 2016 Alumni Awards recipients, including nationally and locally prominent leaders in their fields - from CEOs to radio and television personalities - as well as individuals who have a history of service to the University of Houston and their respective communities. Honorees will be recognized at the 62nd Annual Awards Gala, Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the Omni Galleria, Houston.

Among the award recipients is Lisa Cushing ('01), who has been named UHAA's Rising Star. This award honors motivated young alumni who have excelled beyond the norm early in their careers. Cushing is the owner and lead designer for Petals by Design, an award-winning floral boutique specializing in weddings and large events. She also serves on the UH Spirit of Houston Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Cushing realized that she needed to pursue a career area where she could express her creative talent, yet merge it with her technical aptitude. She landed in the College of Technology's occupational technology and industrial studies program, which is now digital media, focusing her studies on graphic communications. Cushing spent some time in the industry as a print buyer for a graphic design company that provided her with more skills and prepared her for the next venture.

Her affinity for floral arranging began in 2004 after working part-time in a flower shop. "I created custom flowers for a couple of weddings here and there, and before I realized it, I became a full-time entrepreneur after three years," she reflected. "Being attuned to the technical details is very important in this business," she said. "Just treat people right with a high level of integrity. I enjoy each opportunity to use my creativity and knowledge of technology in a way that makes my customers happy."
